Interaction of a Bulk and a Surface Energy with a Geometrical Constraint

چکیده
This study is an attempt to generalize in dimension higher than two the mathematical results in [8] (Computing the equilibrium con guration of epitaxially strained crystalline lms, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 62 (2002), no. 4, 1093 1121) by E. Bonnetier and the rst author. It is the study of a physical system whose equilibrium is the result of a competition between an elastic energy inside a domain and a surface tension, proportional to the perimeter of the domain. The domain is constrained to remain a subgraph. It is shown in [8] that several phenomenon appear at various scales as a result of this competition. In this paper, we focus on establishing a sound mathematical framework for this problem in higher dimension. We also provide an approximation, based on a phaseeld representation of the domain.

Free and constrained equilibrium states in a variational problem on a surface
We study the equilibrium states for an energy functional with a parametric force field on a region of a surface. Consideration of free equilibrium states is based on Lyusternik - Schnirelman's and Skrypnik's variational methods. Consideration of equilibrium states under a constraint of geometrical character is based on an analog of Skrypnik's method, described in [P. Vyridis, {it Bifurcation in...
متن کاملBifurcation in a variational problem on a surface with a constraint
We describe a variational problem on a surface under a constraintof geometrical character. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence ofbifurcation points are provided. In local coordinates the problem corresponds toa quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem. The problem can be consideredas a physical model for several applications referring to continuum medium andmembranes.

The binding energy and geometrical structure of all the possible dimeric systems of isothiocyanic acid (HNCS) with ozone have been investigated in the gas phase, theoretically. Six minima located on the singlet potential energy surface of the HNCS–ozone system at the MP2 level with binding energies (corrected with ZPE and BSSE) in the range 492.29–531.40 kcal/mol. All intermolecular interaction...
